Neighbors for Refugees (NFR) is a Westchester-based nonprofit founded six years ago to support refugee families as they rebuild their lives. This page outlines how NFR revamped its communications strategy to strengthen fundraising, visibility, and advocacy at a critical moment for refugees—achieved entirely through the work of a small, all-volunteer team.
Beginning in 2015, NFR invested in film-driven storytelling, consistent email and social outreach, and a redesigned website focused on growing subscribers, donors, and volunteers. In response to shifting national policies in 2016, these efforts expanded to elevate NFR’s voice and impact when refugee families faced increasing threats.
Over the past 18 months, this volunteer-led effort delivered measurable results: website traffic increased eight-fold, donations grew despite a challenging political climate, and more than a dozen films—including two mini-documentaries—were produced. Today, Neighbors For Refugees has a strong, scalable communications platform that amplifies its mission, mobilizes supporters, and advocates effectively for the value and dignity of refugees.
This film was a key part of our 2025 fund raising drive. First premiered at Neighbors For Refugees gala in 2025.
Throughout the year we use video to tell stories about the volunteers and about our refugee families
The key to our work is to drive people to our website. There they are encouraged to donate and subscribe to our newsletter or even to volunteer. By channeling viewers through social media and the newsletter we have increased our monthly viewers about seven-fold in the last 9 months

Prior to commencing this campaign, NFR issued maybe a newsletter each quarter in addition to a fundraising appeal. We increased this to a monthly newsletter that links to stories on our site, new videos etc. - always with an eye to encourage donations

Google generously support nonprofits like NFR with a program called Ad Grants. This program donates up to $10,000 each month in Google Adwords advertising under strict criteria. We worked with an agency who specializes in this program Cause Inspired. In order to drive relevance NFR also set up a separate news page that features stories

We worked with an agency who specializes in this program Cause Inspired. In order to drive relevance NFR also set up a separate news page that features stories about NFR as well as stories about the refugee struggle. As a result, we receive as much as $8,000/month in paid ads which has been instrumental in driving our website traffic
